Black Cliff Beach is situated between the Hayle River estuary and Mexico Towans, forming the eastern end of the extensive sands of St Ives Bay. Well known for its peaceful setting and natural back-drop, Black Cliff offers a wide sandy area, especially at low tide, providing ample space for walking and enjoying the coastline.
The beach is set beneath grassy dunes and a cliff, which gives it a more sheltered and secluded feel compared to some of the nearby, more popular beaches. It is often quieter even during the summer months, appealing to those seeking solitude or space to exercise dogs.
Due to a lack of facilities and access via coastal paths and dunes, Black Cliff Beach remains relatively undeveloped and less crowded. Its tidal nature connects it seamlessly with the wider Hayle Towans beach system when the tide is out.
Swimming is not recommended because there is no lifeguard cover, and currents can be strong. The beach’s location also makes it popular for long walks, birdwatching near the estuary, and enjoying the extensive sands.
