Gwithian Beach stretches along the eastern side of St Ives Bay, forming part of an extensive sandy coastline backed by dunes known as The Towans. The beach is popular with surfers due to reliable Atlantic swells and facilities supporting both beginners and more experienced surfers. Long, flat sands make it ideal for beach walks and family days out, with plenty of room at all but the highest tides.
The area is also notable for sweeping dunes, rock pools, and views towards Godrevy Lighthouse. At low tide, the beach connects with neighboring sands towards Hayle, creating one of the longest continuous sand stretches in Cornwall. The expansive nature means it rarely feels crowded, even in high summer.
Facilities include seasonal lifeguard cover, toilets, surf schools, and cafés close to the main access points. Gwithian is regarded as both a destination for water sports and a quiet escape for wildlife watchers, with seals and seabirds regularly spotted along the coastline.
